Q

Tone? With evidence

A

“On another occasion, […] legs it up the road”
^ killing has become normal to him.
However this killing is different

“Well myself and somebody else and somebody else”
LANGUAGE of distance - making them seem less responsible
Not naming any names as he knows his actions are wrong

“Three of a kind all letting fly”
“Letting fly” - like a videogame, makes it seem like it wasnt murder

CHANGE TO ITALICS:
“I see every round as it rips through his life”
“Through his life” toiched everything about his life, tragic for family too

“Sort of inside out”
Registering the soldier’s horror, not seen anything quite so horrible yet - takes notice and “torn” this man inside out and this image haunts him.

“my mates”
Now admits that he is just like them and is part of them

“tosses his guts back into his body”
Sees things differently than his “mate” and feels guilt now whereas his mates may not - or is a spokesman for soldiers who suffer PTSD and guilt

“End of story”
This is the start though - he wants this to be over
Reveals callousness / disregard necessary in a soldier
Morals in a story (moral destruction bc of conflict)

“the drink and the drugs won’t flush him out”
Trying to “flush” out the memory and guilt

“his bloody life in my bloody hands”
Repetition of bloody (colloquial language) shows how much he wants to rid himself of this memory
Lamguage of guilt
Pun: dark humour

Q

Allusions:

A

“Three of a kind” - three musketeers
Used here ironically as they are not fighting for justice like the french soldiers did.

“Sleep” “Dream”
Shakespearean link
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth cannot sleep due to their guilt of murder
Macbeth hath murder sleep

“Bloody life in my bloody hands”
Link to Macbeth again - blood throughout, LM knows an ocean wont wash out this guilt - does suicide as this soldier considere suicide too.

Q

“Agony” “goes by” “body” “lorry”

A

Half rhymes - used to unsettle things - represents the unsettled mind of the soldier due to his own actions (his mind isnt made up and is at conflict). Rhyme suggests wholeness but this doesnt occur..
