REM Sleep & Dreams Flashcards
0
Q
Hypothesis of the study
A
- A significant association between REM sleep and dreaming
- Significant positive correlation between the estimate of the duration of dreams and the length of the eye movement
- Significant association between the position of eye movement and the context of the dream
1
Q
Aim of the study
A
To investigate the relationship between eue movement and dreaming
2
Q
Sample of the study
A
- 7 adult males
- 2 adult females
- All volunteers
- 5 were studied intensively
- 4 were used as a backup
3
Q
Method of the study
A
Lab experiment using self report
- Observational & Interviews
4
Q
Design of the study
A
Repeated measure design
- Ps slept and woken at various times
5
Q
IV & DV of the study
A
IV : Ps woken in REM and NREM
DV1 : EEG and EOG reading
DV2 : Self report of dreaming (recording)
6
Q
Procedure of the study
A
- Ps reported to sleep just before their normal bedtime
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of experiment
7
Q
Results of the study
A
- Ps woken in REM reported dreaming abt 80% (152/191) and only 15% (39/191) of the time the ps didnt recall their dreams
- Ps could quite accurately estimate the length of time they had been dreaming
- In most cases, they were association between eye movement and the context of dream.
8
Q
Conclusion of the study
A
All the hypothesis
9
Q
Strengths of the study
A
Control of variables - Highly controlled experiments (lab) - Location, duration of sleep - Ps not using stimulants (Caffeine & Alcohol) - Objective precise measurements Data - Both qualitative & quantitative - Provide more in depth and richer information
