Backlash after 9/11?
=> Discriminatory backlash against Muslims or those perceived to be members of these groups, from threats to even murder. A ‘Counter-Jihad’ movement created fear of Islam, leading to the spread of misinformation.
Visa requirements?
=> USA tightened visa requirements for citizens of countries identified as having ties to terrorism or instability. E.g Iran and Iraq.
=> Also greater scrutiny for those from countries that harboured or supported terrorist groups. => Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Manhattan?
=> It is one of the richest neighbourhoods in the USA, with housing prices being 404% higher than the US average.
Glory and nostalgia of the USA?
=> After the war, America was showered in victorious glory from winning the war.
=> From then, it established itself as a global power - a military heavyweight, an economic leader, and had cultural dominance.
The American Dream?
=> The National Ethos of America that everyone there has the freedom and opportunity to succeed and attain a better life. 1/5 migrants named US as desired place of residence.
Princeton?
A prestigious university, part of America’s elite Ivy League. Ranked 17th in the world.
Indian-Pakistan standoff?
=> 2001-2 conflict almost brought both countries to war after a terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament was blamed on Pakistani based terrorist groups.
War on Terror?
=> A global military campaign, led by the US, following 9/11. Declared by Bush. Targets militant Islamic movements. Invaded Afghanistan and used war of terror as a guise for Iraq war.
Janissaries?
=> Christian boys who had been kidnapped and trained to serve the Ottoman Empire.
