A
  • Dad was a sports journalist which caused their family to travel frequently
  • Her mother was extremely involved in voluntary work.
  • The 1920s - after the first world war, children were no longer restricted by their parents, women were more liberated.
  • During this time she moved away from traditional values and was very involved in women’s right, particularly the suffragette movement during this bohemian stage of her life.
  • She then began to work at a newspaper and this was the beginning of her social justice action as she wrote articles about the homeless and their rights regarding renting

What was the contribution of Dorothy Day on Christianity?

A

Dorothy rejuvenated Christian teaching and ideology;

  • She reminded Christians of the true meaning of “loving thy neighbour” (Matthew 25) and turned this teaching to practice (i.e House of hospitality / serving the poor / feeding the hungry).
  • She also modelled the Beatitudes in her everyday life “Blessed are the poor in spirit”… “Blessed are the meek”… Blessed are the peacemaker” (She was faithful, humble, merciful, strove for justice)
  • She was a Pacist-advocate for peace as evident through her protests against war, conscription and discrimination. She used the Catholic Worker as a tool to promote peace carrying on Jesus’ example of non-violence.
