A notoriously problematic, ambiguous word
Not a term we attempt a universal definition for
Why not?
Examples? Religion vs politics, Religion vs science, religion vs secular, spiritual vs worldly
“Religion” (divine, spiritual world, sacred, solemn, other-wordly, clerical, ministry)
“Non-religion”(mundane, material world, vulgar, fun,play, this-worldly, popular, commerce)
Where does it come from? Latin language or the word “religio”,
Early Meaning? Ceremonial obligations to the gods
1800’s “religion” becomes a generic western term

A

Heathenism- belief or practice of the heathens, idolatry
Paganism is a large term that includes witchcraft (Wicca), Druidism (Celtic traditions), and Norse (Viking) rituals in Scandinavia. Neopaganism maintains spiritual practices outside of the major religions such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam

Sex, Gender

A

male, female, interest, Not a synonym for women, masculine, feminine; man, women,boy, girl
-category, classification, value, powers
-Gender and performance
-strictly “either/or” exclusionary problem
-Many people historically do not conform to such definitions
-e.g. Non-binary, gender-fluid, two spirits, transgender
Example: Scrub Daddy and Scrub Mommy
Gendering: assigning gender to certain objects
Scrub mommy is pink and scrub daddy is yellow

Rebirth, Samsara

A

continuous cycle of life, death and rebirth. This cycle is known as samsara. The ultimate aim of Buddhist practice is to become free from samsara.
The concept of Samsara is reincarnation, the idea that after we die our soul will be reborn again in another body
