Heelas& Woodhead use the Kendall project to support this argument.
80% of the NA audience are women
Why do a lot of the movements appeal more to the middle classes? Why else is it attractive to middle classes (Wallis)
. mainly because they are expensive to participate in
. Wallis argues that the crisis of identity is a particular problem for middle classes due to the speed of modern life- they have a chance to unlock their human potential and solve their problems
Why else are middle classes drawn to NRMS- RELATIVE DEPRIVATION
who came up with the relative deprivation theory in regard to middle classes? Glock and Stark
The influence of the media and the general public joining NRMs
the general public is influenced to see other movements joining these movements when they see celebrities like Tom Cruize join Scientology for example
REASONS BEHIND JOINING A WORLD REJECTING MOVEMENT (A SECT)
?
Why does WEBER argue people join sects?
WEBER argues that people join sects because of MARGINALITY, inequality, it can help people make sense of this and feel part of a community ie Jim Jones and the People’s Temple
Why does Glock and Stark argue that women are more likely to join a sect?
Compensation for deprivation. women are more likely to be deprived (financially) and are more likely to be morally conservative - likely to follow the strict teachings of a sect more then men
How can social change cause people to join sects? and who came up with it?
Rapid social change can cause uncertainty and anomie. Weber came up with this idea
How does the weakness of a denomination or a church make people more likely to join a sect?
may feel that a church has become weak in its principles and turn to more extreme organisation.
