Religious Experience - Visions Flashcards
what is a vision?
it is a view or message from god, sometimes delivered to one person sometimes to whole groups of people
an example of this would be Moses and the burning bush
another example would be WWI soldiers who claimed the angle of st george shields them from the german troopers
what are the three types of visions
corporeal
intellectual
imaginative
give an example of a corporeal vision
hint corporeal means physical
st bernadette saw a vision of st mary multiple times.
the lady asked her to tell the priests to build a chapel at lourdes as well as scratching the earth to reveal spring water in the presence of st mary
give an example of an intellectual vision
hint intellectual means experiencing the event rather than observing
teresa of avila
she claimed she saw an angel holding a spear with fire at the end. it was pierced into her heart several times. she was “left on fire with a wondrous love for god”
give an example of an imaginative vision
hint imaginative is when it occurs in a dream
joseph
he was told in a dream to not worry about marrying marry and that she will birth jesus
give a reason why people may not believe voices and visions as a reliable evidence to prove the existence of god
many schizophrenics have claimed they’ve heard a voice from god telling them to kill people
for example the york ripper killed prostitutes due to god telling him to do so
