NO: Everyday life is different to supernatural events

YES: Supported by Toronto blessing as not all could have been on drugs?
NO: People act weird to not feel left out?
YES: There is no evidence so we should accept that the experience is true for that person

YES: Jungle- similar to religion as some believers find God where as others have not yet found God

YES: Millions of people have similar religious experiences
NO: People could be interpreting experiences wrong
YES: Or the people who haven’t had experiences could have but not interpreted them correctly?

A

NO: There is a psych explanation but that doesn’t discount the experience as mental state is caused by physical things
YES: It does question if experience is from something rather than God
NO: If God created our minds then does that not still make the experience from God

A

Religion is a method used to control people in a conditioned system. The experience is positive as that’s what they want you to think.

A

NO: Plurality of experience supports experience. Many intelligent people have experiences.
YES: It does provide another explanation without the use of God
NO: The explanation is no more valid than to say they are from God. No evidence of being socially conditioned.

  1. Supports the idea of a personal God who is interested in the world (although James himself never speaks of God but something higher)
  2. Pragmatism- the effects if long term support the experience for that person
  3. Pluralism- Religious experiences were studied from many cultures and time periods making it more probable that they are from God as there is weight in numbers
  4. Empiricism- Evidence was found from primary sources to support the likelihood of religious experiences
  5. Although there is a psychological explanation is doesn’t discredit the supernatural aspects

A

YES: Weight in numbers supports James as evidence from all time/cultures/ages
NO: It does not prove where experiences come from it only makes it more probable
YES: Not concerned with where experience comes from but the truth it holds for that person

Counter-Criticism?

A

Not relevant to anyone but the believer? Can interpret experience in religious framework even though others might not.

BUT… The truth it holds to the believer and the effects on their life is what matters not whether other people believe it or not.
