Q

example of conversion expereince

A

From Saul to Paul
As Saul traveled toward Damascus, he encountered a blinding light and heard a voice, revealing himself to be Jesus. This encounter caused Saul to fall to the ground and experience a profound transformation. Jesus instructed Saul to go into Damascus, where he would be told what to do.
Blindness and Restoration: Following his encounter with Jesus, Saul was blinded and unable to see. He was led to Damascus and spent three days in a state of blindness and fasting. During this time, God sent Ananias to restore Saul’s sight and reveal to him the truth about Jesus.

Q

What were Richard Swinburne’s two principles?

A

Principle of Credulity - people should be believed unless we have good reason to disbelieve them

Principle of testimony- people in general are truthful and there needs to be good reasons to doubt their honesty

17
Q

What are the issues with Swinburne’s principles?

A

Testimony is likely to be about something rare and unusual, religious experience is something not in the everyday and known

God cannot be defined, which increases the possibilities of error

One can be truthful in saying what they believe to be true but this does not mean that their truth has been correctly perceived

18
Q

What is a truth claim?

A

Belief that their interpretation is the correct one
Difference in experiences on the other hand are okay

18
Q

What was St Teresa of Avila’s mystical experience?

A

series of visions
experienced the ‘ecstasy’ also known as transverberation as a mystical experience of an arrow piercing her heart with the love of God

intellectual insights into the divine

experienced accusations that her experiences were a result of sexual frustrations and they were psychologically driven

19
Q

what is the difference between a conversion expereince and a mystical experience?

A

A conversion is a radical shift in belief system, often involving a turning away from a previous belief and embracing a new one, while a mystical experience is a profound, often sudden, sense of union with the divine or a deeper reality

20
Q

What is a corporate experience?

A

an experience shared by a group such as a Toronto blessing
‘holy laughter’
mass hysteria?- is it simply influence of those around us, those attracted to charismatic and evangelist worship are already predisposed to this kind behaviour
- in actuality is an individual experience - since everyone has their own perceptions

21
Q

problems with the corporate experience

A
  • speaking in tongues was more comprehensible than holy laughter, what does it actually show us/teach us
  • what is God trying to achieve, lacks logic, doesn’t reveal God in any way
  • could be argued that rather than helping the faithful, if it is an act of God then it is not a God worthy of human worship
22
Q

What is numinous - name given by Otto?

A

any experience of God which transcends the everyday

23
Q

what does Otto mean by the wholly other and mysterium tremendum et fascinans

A

the term wholly other signifies a God that is not among human beings but of an entirely different order

this meeting through mystical experience is somewhat a seduction

24
describe the view that religious experiences are a union with a greater power
the mode of sensation must be different then as experienced with another human closeness and overwhelm
25
psychological effect- an illusion?
e.g. imaginary friends, our mind is capable hearing voices or seeing things due to a fear or a want we are prone to so many perceptual errors
