Give 3 reasons why the Pope was responsible for the failure to get a divorce?
Pope feared to act because of pressure from Charles V who strongly opposed the divorce as Catherine’s nephew. Charles V pulled the Sack of Rome 1527 to increase the Popes fear and became dominant in Italy from 1529.
Pope had his own self interest as he thought Charles would punish the rulers of Florence and would call the General council to solve his problems with German Lutherans which was a threat to papal power. The pope was trying to please Charles to recover Florence and keep his power.
Pope was unwilling to admit the pope had been wrong giving the dispensation especially when the pope was under watch from the Lutherans ready to criticise him
