What is a belief?
A conviction about an idea central to a religion and expresses a religious truth
What is a religious belief?
An idea that the followers of the religion hold to be deeply and permanently true.
Belief concern idea about God, about human life and about life after death.
What is a creed?
A profession of faith through a set of words that say what a person or group believes in and helps express the identity of the group.
What is the apostles creed?
One of the earliest expressions of christian belief. Not written by the apostles, it is a powerful statement of the apostles about the core beliefs of the early church.
What was the purpose of the apostles creed?
Help bishops with preaching, teaching and defending the church against false teachings
Define heretics
Members of the church who denied the truths of the church’s teachings
Eg. Arius
Define heresies
Teachings that went against the church’s teachings
Eg. Arianism
What is Arianism?
They denied Jesus’ define nature, and believed he is not made of the same substance as God
What is Gnosticism?
Concerned about the nature of God
