  • the power to do as one pleases
  • freedom from physical restraint
  • freedom from despotic control > dictator
  • The positive enjoyment of rights and privileges
  • the power of choice

 The poor lack all of these through their inabilities to afford the basic necessities of life to function

Poor> not owning a car> not having the BASIC necessity to SUCEED

A

Equality of opportunity not of outcomes
 Everyone has a right to an education and means to a livelihood
 Is that educational opportunity of equal quality?
 School funding & property taxes
 Lack of proper teaching resources and experienced
teachers
 Poor child does not have access to in-home learning resources
or expectations for higher education
 Lesser education limits your future employment opportunities

 How does poverty status undermine the democratic process?

A

Government of the people and by the people for the people
 This presumes equal access for participation by all
 If a group is underrepresented in the democratic process then there is a structural
flaw in that democracy
 Poor have a harder time participating through their vote due to the way we
schedule voting
 The ability of run for office in cost prohibitive
 Money buys access in the form of a lobby voice that exerts influence
 The poor’s income status denies them participation
