Define ethics
Ethics is a discipline which involved the use of reason in decision-making in terms of what is good and bad. It involves consideration of obligations, responsibilities and the purposeful actions of individuals, groups and society.
Define morality
Morality is the code which assists a person in the decision-making process. E.g. The beliefs and values that a person holds
Define ethical issue
An ethical issue is a conflict of right (ethical) and wrong (unethical) or situation forcing alternatives on an entity seeking ethical behaviour.
List the 3 ethical frameworks
Deontological
Character/Virtue Ethics
Utilitarianism (including branch of consequentialism)
Deontological
Identifies rules or intrinsic values and applies them to the situation regardless of consequences.
Utilitarian
Promotes the greatest good for the greatest number. The moral worth of an action is determined by its overall contribution to the happiness of society as a whole.
Character / Virtue Ethics
Person rather than action based; exploring the virtue or moral character of the person carrying out the action, rather than the ethical duties, rules or consequences or particular actions.

Ethical Code
Developed by a company or profession for employees and clients. It outlines ways of behaving which are appropriate to the profession.
Common Good
Something that should benefit the community as a whole. Concerns the rights of the individuals in society.
Bioethics
The study of the ethical and moral questions involved in the application of new biological and medical findings in the fields of genetic engineering, neurobiology and drug research among others.
Care Ethics
This branch of ethics dresses the importance of relationships and an appreciation of practical needs
Natural Law
Innate knowledge of right and wrong that is part of being human. This theory relies on humans using their powers of reasoning correctly.
Conscience
The inner sense of what is right or wrong in one’s conduct or motives, impelling one towards right action.
Informed Conscience
According to Christianity a conscience must be well-informed to determine the rightness of a particular action and then make people aware of issues that might not initially be obvious when making a decision. A person consults writings, teachings, traditions, moral codes, religious authorities to make creative constructive choices so an action is ethical.
