Religion & Society - pentecost Flashcards
Beliefs of Pentecost
The Acts of the Apostles recounts the story of the original Pentecost Sunday (Acts 2). Jews “from every nation under heaven” (Acts 2:5)were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish feast of Pentecost. On that Sunday, ten days after the Ascension of Our Lord, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary were gathered in the Upper Room, where they had seen Christ after His Resurrection. The apostles all gathered in a room and suddenly lounges of fire appeared and rested on each of the apostles and they were filled with the holy spirit.
Sacred Stories of Pentecost
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. [Acts 2:2-4]

The perfect Holy Spirit can now be in communion with imperfect humanity. To the degree that redeemed humankind is willing to submit to the Holy Spirit, ever-greater moral and ethical perfection becomes possible. The holy spirit that overcame the apostles makes them and everything they do ethically sound in the eyes of god and people should try to emulate that truth and wholly belief.
Spiritual experiences related to Pentecost
The tongues of fire that came down and blessed the disciples with the seven gifts of the holy spirit and allowed them to speak in tongues and baptise all the people who wanted to be initiated into christianity. Through attending mass, prayer and the Eucharist, Catholics can experience a deeper understanding of God and a sense of peace, perhaps from the feeling of being surrounded by the Holy Spirit. This then obviously relates back to Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles
