Religion III Flashcards
quarter exam 1
personalistic norm
The principle that maintains that a person is to be treated as a unique individual, never a means to another’s end
Two types of stem cell research and the Catholic response
embryonic stem cell research- require the destruction of the human embryo during their isolation.
adult stem cell research- it doesn’t involve human embryonic stem cells
Natural law
moral knowledge written in every human heart and that every human person innately possess.
three characteristics of natural law
- Universal=it applies to all people in all places and all times
- Permanent=it will never end
- Unchanging=it will never alter
Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, what is the difference?
The difference between euthanasia and physician-assisted-suicide is that euthanasia is “easy death” basically to eliminate suffering. Physician-assisted-suicide is ending your own life but by the help of a doctor.
Factors leading to acceptance of Euthanasia
- A cultural climate that sees no value in suffering
- People who neglect God often think they have sole control over life and death.
- As an aging population puts pressure on a costly health care system, some see euthanasia and assisted suicide as “cost-effective”
Ordinary and Extraordinary means distinction
A person is not required to do everything possible to stay alive, especially when the illness is painful and terminal. However, a person must always accept and allow ordinary medical treatment.
KNOW THIS
No one is morally obligated to use every medical means available to prolong one’s life. It is morally permissible to refuse extraordinary medical treatment—that which attempts to do more than keep the patient comfortable and cared for in a basic manner. However, a person must always accept ordinary medical treatment—standard medical care as well as food and water.
Generally, what are the ten commandments
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make idols.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.
Seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching and subsidiarity (Be able to list them!)
- Life and Dignity of the Human Person (WOMB TO TOMB)
- Call to Family, Community, and Participation (SEEKING TOGETHER NOT JUST SOCIAL BUT SACRED)
- Rights and Responsibilities (TWO-SIDED COIN)
- Option for the Poor and Vulnerable (CHRIST IN DISGUISE)
- The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers (ECONOMY SERVES THE PEOPLE)
- Solidarity (WE ARE FAMILY)
- Care for God’s Creation (PROPER USE FOR GOD’S GIFT)
Abortion
The deliberate termination of a pregnancy by killing the unborn child
Explain the difference between abortion and direct abortion.
Abortion is the “deliberate termination of a pregnancy by killing an unborn child”. Direct abortion “is any destruction of the product of human conception, whether before or after the implantation of the womb”.
Abortion mentality
Church’s stance against abortion is not meant as uncompassionate treatment of the woman who has experienced such violence but instead a refusal to allow violence to be extended to another innocent victim: the unborn baby
Personhood
the quality or condition of being an individual person
SLED
1) Size: the fact that an unborn child is small than a born child has no bearing on his or her personhood.
2) Level of Development: ones development does not determine one personhood.
3) Environment: where one is should not be the determining factor in who one is.
4) Degree of Dependency: merely being dependent upon another does not make the unborn baby less of a person
