Q

Of all the titles of Jesus found in the New Testament, explain which speaks to you most powerfully.

A

The title “Son of Man” speaks to me most powerfully because Mark makes the title Son of Man and suffering servant in Isaiah synonymous. In Mark, Jesus states that the Son of Man has come to suffer. It affects me emotionally because it reveals that Jesus suffered for me and shows his great love for me.

Q

What did Paul mean when he talked about the Paradox of the Cross?

A

The Paradox of Cross is that to non-believers, the Cross is foolishness, shame, weakness, and death. To us, it is strength, power, and glory. To Christ, his sacrifice and death is his love and power. His strength is his forgiveness and servitude. Our version of the cross is the opposite of the world’s.

Q

How does Jesus fulfill the Old Testament? Recall either relevant prophecies, covenant promises, or allegorical elements. (15 points)

A

Jesus fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy of a suffering servant, and it is fulfilled in Mark’s Gospel. In Isaiah 53, Jesus’ suffering is described and prophesized. In Mark, Jesus states the Son of Man must suffer, and makes the title suffering servant and Son of Man synonymous. Later on, Jesus suffers in the ways described by Isaiah. He was despised, would bear our transgressions, and would not speak out against his oppression. In Mark, this is fulfilled through Jesus.

Q

Who is the main HUMAN character of the Bible? Explain. Answer MUST include a discussion of this character’s influence in the Old and New Testaments.

A

Humanity is the main character. The Prophets tell us to take care of each other and the poor and vulnerable. Jesus tells us to serve each other and love each other. In Isaiah, Isaiah is one of the prophets whom God sends to us. Jesus tells us to take care of each other in Matthew when he tells us to provide drink, food, and care to the least of those in society. Jesus dies for us in all 4 Gospels. All these point to humanity and how we are called to take care of each other and for our benefit.
