What was transubstantiation?
The belief that when the priest consecrated the bread and the wine (i.e. declared them to be sacred) that the bread and wine were transformed literally into the body and blood of Christ.
What were monks?
Often larger houses, wealthier parts of soceity
What were friars?
Recruited from lower down the social scale of society, declining in importance in late 15th century
What were nunneries?
Enjoyed less prestige than monasteries, often populated by women considered unsuitable for marriage and relatively poor
What did Lollards emphasise the importance of?
Understanding the bible and wanted it to be translated into English
What were Lollards sceptical about?
The beliefs of transubstantiation, and viewed Catholic Church as corrupt
What was the belief of humanism?
Concerned with establishing the reality of Latin and Greek translations by going back to the original texts
Who was Erasmus?
Influenced English humanism and criticised the church abuses, and sought to regenerate Christianity through emphasis on education and rejection of some of the church’s traditional ceremonies.

DURING H7 REIGN, CHURCH WAS GENERALLY IN A HEALTHY STATE, with little dissent and generally cordial relations between the king and pope.
Humanism had begun to take root, but its major influence would not be felt until the reign of H8.
