What is Deterrence?
To try and stop people from committing crimes because they know what the punishment is. Contradicting point ‘thou shall not kill’ if it is killing.
What is Reform?
Punishment aimed to stop criminals from re-offending. Often achieved through an education or training programme in prison. ‘love thy neighbor’
What is Retribution?
A form of revenge on behalf of those who were wronged. Known as ‘eye for an eye’.
What is Reparation?
Criminals should ‘pay’ for the wrong they have done. e.g. community services and fines.
What is Protection?
Making sure that society is safe.
What is Vindication?
If a society has laws then there has to be a punishment.
Give three purposes of punishments.
Protection, Reparation, and Vindication.
Give three main aims of punishments.
Deterrence, Reform, and Retribution.
What is the difference between capital punishment and corporal punishment?
Capital punishment is the same as the death penalty whereas, corporal punishment is inflicting pain. e.g. whipping.
Give three forms of punishments.
Prison, community sentence, corporal punishment capital punishment, and fines.
