Reformation
The sixteenth-century movement to reform the Catholic Church. In England the reformation involved the break with the Catholic Church hats was begun by Henry VIII in the 1530s. The reformation removed the Pope’s authority from England and the monarch became the head of the new Anglican Church
Predestination
The belief that an individual’s salvation was already decided by god and was not dependent on how that person lived. Puritans sometimes referred to themselves as the godly or the elect terms that derived from their belief that their salvation was predestined. The use of these terms was one of the reasons why many regarded puritans as arrogant.
Arminianism
Also known as anti-Calvinism Arminianism was a denomination of Protestantism whose members did not want further reformation of the Church of England, they were seen as close to Catholicism because of their emphasis on ceremony.
Salvation
In Christian theology, being saved from the punishment of sins in the afterlife, or the saving of the souls from sin and its consequences.
Recusancy fines
Fines imposed on recusants - anyone who didn’t attend the compulsory Church of England service on a Sunday. Those more committed to Catholic or Puritan beliefs were most likely not to attend because they felt they couldn’t attend a service they did not agree with.
Jesuits
A religious order seen as the aggressive arm of the Catholic Church that fought to convert Protestant countries to Catholicism under the Pope.
Tithe
One tenth of a parishioner’s produce which was paid as a salary to local clergymen
