Religious groups in Britain
Calvinism: Protestant, main in England
Catholicism: Catholic, main in Ireland
Presbyterianism: Protestant, main in Scotland
Puritanism: Protestant, important English minority
Arminianism: Protestant, minority but had influence.

November 1605.
Radical Catholics attempted to blow up the HoP and the King.
Foiled.
Hampton Court Conference, 1604
To establish how James wanted the Church.
Led people to believe James was hostile to Puritans (untrue).
Only permanent achievement was the King James Bible, which was completed in 1611.
Bancroft’s Canons
Church laws that held up many orthodox doctrines, as well as practices that had been condemned by Puritans.
In December 1604, Richard Bancroft was made Archbishop of Canterbury and ordered clergy that refused to conform be expelled.
The York House Conference, 1626
Charles’ favourite, Buckingham, chaired a theological debate. The focus was on the writings of Montagu.
Warwick intended to persuade Charles to move away from Arminianism.
Charles didn’t even attend.
