What are religious views about the value of the individual?
Religions believe that -
- each individual is created by God.
- every person has a special value to God.
- each person is unique.
- each person is made in God’s image.
- you should treat everyone as equals.
Does religion discriminate against women?
AGREE =
- Roman Catholics - do not allow women priests.
- Muslims (Islam) - women are expected to bring up children.
- Orthodox Jews - no allowed to sit with men in the synagogue.
DISAGREE =
- Buddhists (Buddhism) - taught that everyone should be treated equally.
- Protestants - allow women to be priest.
- Hindus (Hinduism) - mean and women are equal but have different roles.
Why are religious believers against discrimination?
- unfair.
- not just.
- it is a result of pre-judging (something they cannot do).
What are the causes of racism?
- stereotyping.
- influence of parents.
- influence of media (newspapers).
- look different (skin colour).
- different religious beliefs.
What is the attitude of religious believers towards racism?
- racism is wrong, cruel and unfair.
- people are equal (the Bible says that all humans are created in gods image and are equal before God).
- following teachings of Jesus (“love your neighbour”) (the Good Samaritan).
- Jesus mixed with outcasts who were looked down on.
Is religious prejudice the worst type of prejudice?
AGREE =
- goes against the teaching of any religion (belief in harmony).
- can end in violence, death and even terrorism.
- can lead to other forms of prejudice (sexism).
DISAGREE =
- other forms of prejudice just as bad, if not worse (racism - can lead to ethnic abuse).
Should religious believers do more to fight prejudice?
- need to show love for others / promote harmony.
- people have been attacked and killed because of prejudice.
- following teachings of Jesus (“love your neighbour”) (Good Samaritan).
- famous religious people / leaders have fought prejudice in the past (Martian Luther King) (Gandhi) - inspired by Jesus.
What did Martin Luther King do to fight to prejudice?
- organised bus boycott.
- got thousands of civil rights protesters to march on Washington for freedom and equality.
- used peaceful methods.
- made great speeches (“ I have a dream”).
What did Gandhi do you to fight prejudice?
- fought apartheid laws in South Africa.
- used peaceful non co-operation.
- refused to pay taxes.
- wore loincloth to show equality with poor.
What is positive discrimination?
When people are treated better because they have been discriminated against in the past (the elderly, homosexuals).
Why might some religious believers support positive discrimination?
- to achieve equality.
- to help people realise that mistakes have been made in the past (not to do it again).
Is there nothing wrong with positive discrimination?
AGREE =
- ensures minorities are represented.
- can help those who have not been given an equal opportunity in the past (homosexuals).
- may help to get a gender / race / culture balance to have other views represented.
DISAGREE =
- can upset those who feel it is worked against them.
- younger applicants feel a victim of prejudice.
- goes against the religious idea of the quality.
- all discrimination is wrong.
Explain how the law tries to prevent discrimination?
- 1975 Sex Discrimination Act (equal pay for men and women).
- 2006 Equality Act (against religious discrimination and ageism).
- allowing civil partnerships / same sex marriages.
Is fear one of the greatest causes of prejudice?
YES =
- people are fearful of others who are different (skin colour / race).
- there is fear over losing jobs to foreign migrants.
- fear that others are better than them.
NO = - other reasons for prejudice = - prejudice copied from parents. - influence of media. - prejudiced due to ignorance / lack of knowledge.
