Religion Flashcards
This shows Simon - symbol of Religion, is leading Ralph : Golding is showing Religion comes before mortals. Despite the fact that the boys chooses to ignore it; stresses the insignificance of Religion on the island.
‘Simon, walking in front of Ralph….’ (P128)
Existence of snakes contrasts the Utopia to The Garden of Eden, foreshadows how the boys will be ‘misguided’ by the snake, which in theology symbolises evilness/immortality.
‘“Snakes! Snakes! Look at the snakes !”(P60)
Early acts of Ralph was swim nakedly, showing the innocence of mankind at first before they became associates with temptation and wrong doing.
‘And stood there naked….’(P15)
The first kill, committed by the hunters, portrays Original Sin. Which results mankind in can no longer able to be ‘immune’ to it. Soon it becomes addictive and necessary for the boys too.
‘“Look! We’ve killed a pig…”’ (P86)
Conversation between Simon and Lord of the Flies resembles Christ’s conversation with the devil. Religiously, this shows Simon is the Prophet who brings balance on the island. Thus total outbreak of savagery after the abolishment of religion.
‘They think you’re batty.’(P177)
