Hindu
a word that comes from the name of the Indus River, which also gives the name of the modern state of India.

Most Hindu families have a shrine in their home which is dedicated to a god or goddess. The shine may be as large as a room, or as small as a little table

A temple (or MANDIR) is considered the residence of a god on earth.
Pilgrim Sites
The Ganges River in India is the holiest site for Hindus. It is said to have originated from the hair of Shiva.
Samsara
The law of birth, death and rebirth, or the process of reincarnation; all life must return to the world after death
Moksha
Freedom or liberation from samsara, or the cycle of rebirth
Karma
the law of cause and effect, of one’s actions having an impact, on one’s’ future life
Dharma
one’s personal code of conduct relating to family and society; one’s duty

yoga; that leads to liberation. Hindus have three yogas, these include knowledge, devotion and action.

must study with a guru which helps them train their minds to see the world as it truly is.
what does meditation in hinduism involve?
it involves special positions and breathing exercises to clear the mind.
What are the two techniques that Hindu’s use in meditation?
Mantra: a word, phrase or sound repeated
Mandala: a symbolic circle that represents the universe
Hindu’s tradition roles?
gender division which can also be seen in the education system: girl from poor family might not be able to attend highschool
Dowry?
is money or other valuable that the bride brings to her marriage; the bride’s family must give the groom valuables before the wedding
Traditional male roles include
Being the head of the family
All property is passed down from the father to son
Only men can become priests and lead public worship
Traditional female roles
Women make all the decisions running the household
Women take charge of the family’s participation in religious rituals.
