What caused the main barrier to the re establishment of Papal Supremacy?
Mary would have to reject act of supremacy which meant she acknowledged statute law over divine law- against her religious beliefs
Pope also wanted the return of monastic lands
Why was the issue of Papal supremacy nit easy to solve in parliament?
What should happen to monastics lands from the dissolved monasteries which were now in private hands. Nobles own and profited off the land so didn’t want to return it
Why did Mary need to consult parliament in order to change religious governance?
Because parliament passed laws which she couldn’t ignore as would lead to parliament trying to remove Mary through rebellion
How was the issue if church land resolved?
Protestants refused to give back lane and refused in law. The law was changed so land didn’t have to be given back but the pope agrees to become head of church- compromise
How did Mary use persuasion to promote Catholicism?
The London Synod if 1555 drew up twelve decrees, spelt out necessity of all parish priests begin resident and put end to abuses
Pole encouraged regular visitations to their dioceses- active role in church
Publication of newly edited Catholic New Testament, new book of Homilies and new Catechism
Cathedral schools founded or reformed at Durham, Lincoln, wells and York
Pole replaced Gardiner as chancellor of Cambridge uni after death
What was the “war of words”?
Policy of censorship e.g. fobade printing of seditious rumours (28th July 1553) Also included suppressing Protestant words as 19000 prayer books in circulation in 1552. Printing press meant further Protestant causes shared
Were the burnings effective?
280 people burned in 46 months including 5 bishops
Mainly in south east, half in London, Canterbury and Colchester
People become martas
Can’t be carried out quickly as administrators have other focuses
