Puritan threats to Elizabeth
- ‘71 MP Strickland wanted reform to prayer book + ban on clergy vestments -> E dissolved parl’t, ideas not discussed
- ‘75 - ‘83 prophesyings, 1576 AoC Grindal gained position (marian exile) protested banning of prophs -> suspended + 200 puritan priests expelled
- ‘83 Stubbs publishes pamphlet criticising marriage negotiations w/ French catholic prince -> sent to tower + right hand chopped off
largely stems from settlement, limited to first half of reign
MQOS as a Catholic threat to Elizabeth
MQOS arrives in england 1568
- ‘69 Northern earls rebellion 6,000 soldiers take Durham cathedral + want to place Mary on throne -> E sends huge army under Sussex to crush it + 800 rebels executed
- ‘86 Babington plot to remove E discovered by Walsingham, proved Mary’s guilt -> Mary executed 1587 after E indecisive
Foreigners as a Catholic threat to Elizabeth
- ‘67 Spanish force of 10,000 in Netherlands commanded by Duke of Alva raised fear of invasion
- ‘70 Papal Bull excommunicated E from catholic church -> Treasons Act 1571, no one can say E is not rightful monarch
- ‘71 Ridolfi plot, banker tried to arrange marriage of Norfolk + overthrow E w/ help of Philip + Alva -> discovered by Walsingham + Cecil and Norfolk executed
Main elements of the 1559 religious settlement
Act of Supremacy - Elizabeth still head of the church, catholic hierarchy remained
Act of Uniformity - new prayer book in English, decorations limited
Royal Injunctions - guidelines for preaching, pilgrimages banned
Why was there opposition to the religious settlement?
Catholics upset at reforms attacking their practices
Puritans angry settlement had not gone far enough
Elizabeth looked to appease both sides in the settlement whilst implementing her protestant beliefs on the church
