Reliance On Fossil Fuels Flashcards
When did people start using fossil fuels? What did they use before this
People started using fossil fuels in the 18th century at the start of the industrial revolution. Before this, people used wood, horses and man power.
As of 2013, what percentage of the worlds energy consumption was meet using fossil fuels?
As of 2013, 87% of the global energy consumption was meet using fossil fuels.
How are fossil fuels formed and approximately how long do they take to produce??
Fossil fuels are formed from prehistoric plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Over millions of years, the dead plants and animals slowly decomposed into organic material and formed fossil fuels. They take approximately 200-300 million years to produce.
Name the main fossil fuels found on Earth.
Coal, Oil and Gas
What was the result of the industrial revolution?
As a result of the industrial revolution, the worlds population increased by 100% and has massively increased since
Name the 4 main uses of fossil fuels as stated in the study guide.
Plastics, Fibres, Pharmaceutics and Transport.
What will be the 2 main drivers in our soar for energy demand in the future? What would the implications be if we were to rely on purely fossil fuels in terms of resource depletion and environmental impacts?
The 2 main drivers in our energy demand in the future will be electric cars and electric heating for our homes. If this was met by fossil fuels, the sources would be depleted much sooner than expected and there would be a huge increase in CO2 emissions.
List 4 developing countries and their impact on future energy demand. Give reasons for their increased demand for energy.
India, China, Brazil and South Africa. These developing nations have a rapidly increasing population which is going to heavily increase the demand for energy as there will be an increase in electric cars and electric home heating.
Explain why global action on conservation of fossil fuels and climate change is needed.
Global action is needed to be taken to prolong the life of the fossil fuels so that we can come up with large renewable energy sources to meet the demands. Also the increasing climate change caused by CO2 emissions by burning these fossil fuels needs to stop as it is destroying the earth.
Name an international scientific panel and outlining 3 pieces of evidence provided by this panel in 2007 that link the use of fossil fuels to global warming and climate change.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change provide research that increased precipitation links to the use of fossil fuels. A decreasing ocean pH level and the melting of the polar ice caps is also related to the use of fossil fuels.
List the 4 advantages of Carbon Trading
Environment, Financial Incentive, Flexibility and Control
List the 4 disadvantages of Carbon Trading.
Economy, Size of Credits, Measuring and Complexity of the Market.
State the law of conservation of energy. Give an everyday example.
Energy can not be created of destroyed, merely transformed from one form to another. A system where the energy in = energy out e.g. 100J in, 100J out.
What is a direct source, what is an indirect source.
Direct means that the source is taken directly from the environment e.g. Wind, Sun, Water. Indirect source are taken energy from a renewable source.
List Direct and Indirect Sources.
Direct = Wind Turbines, Solar Thermal, Hydro Electric, Wave, Tidal Indirect = Biomass, Solar PV
