Reliability in Diagnosis of Schizophrenia Flashcards
What is reliability if a diagnosis?
The consistency of a measuring tool.
What are the two ways to test reliability?
Test-retest.
Inter-rater.
What is test-retest basically?
Same person, same test.
What is Inter-rater basically?
Multiple testers.
What is test-retest reliability in terms of diagnosing schizophrenia?
The ability for doctors to reach he same conclusions about a patient at two different points in time.
Why do we need test-retest reliability when diagnosing schizophrenia?
So a patient isn’t labelled with a diagnosis that then changes or is re-diagnosed with a different condition later on.
What is inter-rater reliability in terms of diagnosing schizophrenia?
Doctors reaching the same conclusion about a patients diagnosis.
They should be able to consult the DSM about a patient independently and achieve the same diagnosis.
What does research suggest about cultural differences in the diagnosis of schizophrenia?
That culture has an influence on the diagnostic process.
What was done that showed differences in ‘hearing voices’ across cultures?
Luhrmann interviewed 20 people from Ghana, 20 people from India and 20 people from the US with schizophrenia who heard voices.
Many of those from Africa and India reported the voices as ‘playful’ and said they had had positive experiences.
None of the Americas reported the same, they reported the voices as hateful or violent.
How many people did Luhrmann interview?
60.
what were the three counties that the people Luhrmann interviewed from?
Ghana.
India.
US.
What is an issue when it comes to reliability?
Cultural differences in diagnosis.
