Reliability and Validity Flashcards
Would you use the word reliability or validity in an exam?
Validity always.
Reliability never.
What is internal reliability?
Treatment of ppts within the study needs to be consistent.
What are the two types of reliability?
Internal and External.
What is external reliability?
It has been done again (replicated) and the same results have been found (or very similar because of individual differences).
What are the three ways you can check a study has reliability?
Test-retest.
Inter-observer reliability.
Measured using correlation.
What is test-resting?
Testing the same person twice.
What is inter-observer reliability?
Comparing observations from different observers.
External reliability.
Is the test-retest method checking internal validity or external reliability?
External.
When measuring reliability using a correlation, what level should ti exceed to be deemed reliable?
0.8.
What is internal validity?
Checking that the study measured what it meant to measure.
Checking the IV was the only effector.
What is external validity doing?
Checking the results of a study are generalisable beyond the experimental setting.
What are the three types of external validity?
Ecological validity.
Population validity.
Temporal validity.
What is ecological validity?
The setting of the study feeling real.
What is temporal validity?
Is the study still relevant today and will it be in the future.
What are the two ways you an assess validity?
Face validity and concurrent validity.
