What is wind/cold invasion?
- creates 6-channel theory
- = to common cold/flu
- aka “Tai Yang Syndrome”
- use of warming diaphoretics to induce sweating
Fx: expel wind, expel cold, warm
S/S:
- chills more than fever
- body aches more than headache
- itchy/scratchy throat
- runny nose (clear, copious mucus)
- tongue = normal
- tongue coat = white
- pulse = superficial & tight
- cough
What is a diaphoretic?
An herbal formula that induces sweating in order to expel pathogens
6 Channel Theory and Syndromes

- TaiYang = (UB/SI) Wind/Cold
- ShaoYang = (GB/SJ) alternating chills & fever (malaria)
- YangMing = (LI, ST) “4 Bigs” (Big fever, thirst, sweat, pulse)
- TaiYin = (LU/SP) Spleen Yang Deficiency Syndrome (diarrhea)
- ShaoYin = (HT/KI) HT/KI Disharmony ie hot/cold, bipolar, shen disturbance
- JueYin = (LV/PC) Separation of yin/yang, upper hot/lower cold
**6 channel theory does not explain bleeding
What is wind/heat invasion?
- creates 4 level theory
- = to warm febrile disease
- use of warming diaphoretics to induce sweating
Fx: expel wind, clear heat, cooling
S/S:
- fever more than chills
- headaches more than body aches
- sore/painful throat
- stuffy nose (sticky yellow discharge)
- tongue = red
- tongue coat = yellow
- pulse = superficial & fast
- cough
4 Level Theory and Syndromes

- Wei Level = wind heat
- Qi Level = YangMing & 4 Bigs
- Ying Level = nutrition level, indistinct skin rash, restlessness, insomnia, ST deficiency
- Xue (Blood) Level = distinct rash, bleeding (hemorrhage, blood in cough/nose/urine/stool/uterus)
Ma Huang
Common name: Ephedra (banned)
Tx: wind/cold
Fx: major warming diaphoretic, causes high fast sweating and quick weight loss
Gui Zhi
Common name: Cinnamon twig (teng/caulis/ramulus) -vs inner bark = rou gui
Tx: wind/cold, neck/shoulder pain, harmonize wei/ying, GYN
Fx: smooth flow of qi and blood
Zi Su Yeg
Common Name: Perilla/Beefsteak Leaf
Tx: wind/cold - meat & seafood poisoning
Fx: aids digestion
Jing Jie
Tx: expels wind
*infrequently used
Fang Feng
Tx: migraines
Fx: major herb to expel wind in interior and exterior
Herbs for Headaches

- Qiang Huo = TaiYang headache (occipital)
- Gao Ben = JueYin headache (vertex)
- Bai Zhi = YangMing headache (frontal)
- Xi Xin = ShaoYin headache (supraorbital/sinus)

1. Sheng Jiang
Common name: ginger
Tx: seafood poisoning (like Zi Su Ye)
Fx: promotes sweating, warms digestion, stops nausea/cough
2. Cong Bai
Common name: scallion
Tx: antibacterial/viral
