Relatonship Formation Flashcards
BH Relationships: Conditioning to romantic relationships
Reinforcement Affect Model (RAM)- Byrne: we like people who are present when we are positively reinforced as they become associated.
Assumes:
- people identify stimuli as rewarding or punish
- we seek relationships associated with reward
- rewarding stimuli = positive feelings etc.
Therefore seek relationships associated with reward.
Social Exchange Theory: whether relationship views as positive/ negative depends on:
- perception of rewards and costs
- perception of what they deserve
- probability of better r/s with someone else
Rewards= physical attraction, finance, provided
Costs= time, financial loss, emotional turmoil
Seek relationships which maximise rewards and minimise costs
BH Relationships: Humans and animals to mother and child
Lorenz split goose egg cluster: group 1 left under mother, 2 in incubator + Lorenz first thing they saw when hatched
2 regarded him as mother and followed him
Geese follow first moving object they see (imprint) and can apply to humans
BH Relationships: Blank slate to mother child
Mary Ainsworth claims child learns to form relationships based on first relationship with primary caregiver, acts as internal model for future relationships
