What are relative pronouns used for?
To connect short sentences or clauses to create longer, more fluid, sentences.
What is a restrictive clause?
Clauses without commas
What is a nonrestrictive caluse?
Clauses with commas.
When can you omit a relative pronoun in Spanish?
Never.
What relative pronoun do you use in a restrictive clause where no preposition or personal “a” precedes the relative pronoun?
Always use “que”.
When do you use “el/los/la/las que”?
After preopositions, though the articles may be omitted after short prepositions such as “en”, “de”, and “con”.
When do you use “el/la/los/las cual(es)”?
They are used interchangeably with “el/los/la/las que”, but are more formal. The definite article can never be omitted though.
When do you use “quien(es)”?
- Only when the relative pronoun refers to people.
- Used if a preposition or personal “a” is necessary in a restrictive clause..
- In nonrestrictive clauses, especially when in written speech.
