When does “où” replace a prepositional phrase?
After a definite article
When does “que” replace a prepositional phrase?
After an indefinite article
When are “duquel” , “de laquelle” etc. used?
When “de” forms part of a complex preposition
When “de” follows a noun governed by a preposition, “au sujet de”
When is “dont” used?
“Dont” replaces a noun which would otherwise be preceded by the preposition “de”. (Dont = de + noun)
What are the English equivalents of “dont”?
“Of which”, “whose”, “about which”, “from which”
What forms do “à” and “lequel” take when combined?
auquel, auxquels, à laquelle, auxquelles
How do you know whether to use “qui” or “lequel/laquelle” etc.?
What is the exception to this rule?
“qui” is used for HUMAN antecedents, “lequel” etc. are used for NON-HUMAN antecedants.
The exception to this is after the prepositions “entre” and “parmi”. “Lequel” must be used after these regardless of if the antecedent is human or not.
