Relative Dating Flashcards
Use words such as “younger” or “older”. This technique is used to determine the age of a rock by comparing. A less advanced technique.
Relative Dating
“The present is key of the past”. This refers to how the earth was shaped entirely by gradual forces still in operation.
Principle of Uniformitarianism
Sedimentary rocks are originally formed in horizontal patterns.
Principle of Original Horizontally
Youngest is on top, oldest is at the bottom.
Principle of Superposition
The geologic feature which cuts another is the younger of the two features.
Principle of cross-cutting relationship
Molten material rises up, which is considered to be the youngest.
This is any material that becomes trapped within a rock or mineral durings its formation.
Principle of Inclusions
All rock layers are laterally continuous and may be broken up or displaced by later events.
Principle of lateral continuity
The remains of species through time in definite order and recognizable order.
Principle of Faunal Succession
The three different unconformities
Disconformity, Nonconformity, Angular-unconformity
A type of relative dating wherein this method, the fossils of one layer are compared with another layer with known dating.
Cross dating
A branch of geology and the earth sciences that deals with the arrangements and succession of strata.
Stratigraphy
Branch of stratigraphy that uses fossils to establish relative ages of rock and correlate successions of sedimentary rocks within dispositional basins.
Biostatigraphy
Layered rocks due to deposition.
Made up of Sandstone, Siltstone and shale.
Strata or stratified rocks
