Q

what’s research support for filter theory?

A

it has face validity as it agrees with most people’s experiences. Winch found evidence that similarity in attitudes was typical for early stages. this echoes the matching hypothesis. he also found complimentarity was important in long term relationships.

Q

how has filter theory failed to replicate?

A

Levinger pointed out that many studies fail to replicate the original findings. he put it down to social change. Kerckhoff + Davis chose an 18 month cut off to distiguish short and long term relationships. they assume partners who have been together longer are more commited and a deeper relationship.
