Relationships & Families Flashcards
Moral Dilemmas
It’s a choice where there are 2 options, but whichever one you choose, something bad will happen. ie a young man wants to save his some of his family members by giving his life up so doctors can use his organs to do so, but if you refuse he’ll have to risk it by having a back alley doctor do it instead. Do you let this young man give up his life to save his family members?

Christian Teachings about Sex
Marital - You should only have sex when you’re married
Unitive - Sex should bring the couple closer together
Procreative - All sex should open to the idea of a baby
This is why the Catholic church doesn’t support gay sex because it can’t be procreative, but they still support the LGBTQ+ community
Sex Before Marriage
The Catholic church doesn’t like the idea of sex before marriage because the sex wouldn’t be as unitive as if the couple were married, and also it doesn’t fulfil their teachings about sex (Marital, Unitive & Procreative)
Other views say that people are allowed to have sex before marriage since it’s a way of showing their commitment to each other. Also people would use contraception because it lowers the chances of having a baby
LGBTQ+
The Catholic Church supports the LGBTQ+ community as everyone is made how God wants us to be. However sex that’s not procreative (involving a penis and a vagina within marriage) is frowned upon, because this sex act would now only be for pleasure and wouldn’t be procreative
Other views show that loving relationships can take place outside of heterosexuality. Also the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t recognise gay marriage which means that LGBTQ+ can never be married and allowed to have sex under the eyes of the church
Homosexuality
The Catholic Church supports the homosexual community as everyone is made how God wants us to be. However sex that’s not procreative (involving a penis and a vagina within marriage) is frowned upon, because this sex act would now only be for pleasure and wouldn’t be procreative
Other views show that loving relationships can take place outside of heterosexuality. Also the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t recognise gay marriage which means that homosexuals can never be married and allowed to have sex under the eyes of the church
Annulment
An annulment is NOT a divorce
It’s a statement from the Catholic Church saying there was no legitimate marriage in the first place. An example of when a couple can get an annulment is when they were forced to get married from their parents, or when one of the spouses had affairs before and during the marriage
Contraception
Preventing pregnancy
Condom
A latex covering that collects sperm after ejaculation. Varys from 95 - 99% for stopping pregnancy. Substance destroys sperm. Has a use by date. Wash hands after putting it on
WRONG under the eyes of the Catholic Church
Contraceptive Pill (Implant)
A tablet taken by a women everyday for 21 days to prevent pregnancy. About 80% effective. Should be taken at the same time of day during the 21 days, and then stop for 7 days. Illnesses and some antibiotics will make it less effective
WRONG under the eyes of the Catholic Church
Coil (IUD)
A small metal device inserted into the uterus to stop fertilised eggs attaching to the wall. It’s an abortive. It’s very small. A trained gynaecologist will insert it into the women’s uterus
VERY WRONG under the eyes of the Catholic Church
Diaphragm
A latex covering of the vagina into which the man inserts his penis. It collects ejaculated sperm. It goes over the opening of the uterus. It’s also known as the “female condom” and is about 80% effective
WRONG under the eyes of the Catholic Church
Withdrawal Method
Where the man withdrawals his penis before ejaculation. Some people don’ have the will power to withdrawal before the pleasure point. Pre seminal fluid (Pre - cum) is a version of lubricant, but can still get a woman pregnant
WRONG under the eyes of the Catholic Church
Rhythm Method (Natural Family Planning)
When the couple plan to have sex during the woman’s natural infertile time. About 60% effective. Getting the women pregnant can still happen, but it’s reduced by a large amount since she’s infertile
Is allowed under the eyes of the Catholic Church because the sex is still procreative
