For:

  • The church must modernise if people are going to be part of it.

  • Men and women are equal when they enter the church (in baptism), so they should be treated equally afterwards.
  • Jesus lived in a patriarchal society where only men would be heard. We live in an equal society.
  • It’s difficult to spread the word when half the population cannot be priests.

Against:

  • Jesus chose men to be his disciples.
  • The priest acts in the place of Christ (in persona Christi), so the priest must be male.
  • “I do not allow women to teach or have authority over men: they must keep silent.” (St Paul’s letter to Timothy)
  • Women can play other important roles in the church as well, (e.g as nuns, chaplins, eucharistic ministers).
