Relationships And Family Flashcards
Bible verses that show God created us as sexual beings
Genesis 1:28-“Be fruitful and multiply.”
Mark 10:7-“A man shall leave his father and mother to be joined to his wife, and this two shall become one.”
Catholic teaching on nature and purpose of sexual love
Unitive (sex bonds the couple and deepens their love), marital (within marriage) and procreative (to reproduce and make children)
Catholic views on contraception and contrasting views
Catholic views on contraception: Abstinence and natural family planning is natural and acceptable, it leads to promiscuity, artificial methods are bad
Contrasting views:
Condoms are good as they reduce STI methods, they are good as they stop unplanned pregnancy and there is nowhere in the Bible that actually forbids contraception
Two catholic teachings on homosexuality
Being attracted to the same sex is acceptable, homosexual acts are forbidden as they are not procreative
Two catholic views on same sex marriage and contrasting views
Catholic views:
Marriage is only between a man and a woman, marriage should be procreative and same sex couples can’t procreate naturally
Contrasting:
Majority of UK see same sex marriage as fine and perfectly legal, homosexuality is something to be celebrated
Why is faithfulness very important to catholics?
It breaks the covenant made with God through marriage, against the 10 commandments, breaks the marriage vows
The nature of catholic marriage
Sacrament
Permanent
Exclusive
Life-giving
Catholic marriage conditions
Must be single, couple must be getting married at their own will, couple must not be related, vows have to made in a priest’s presence, marriage must be consummated, married people must be willing to accept children
Three teachings about the human body from Pope John Paul II’s ‘Theology of the Body’
God established marriage to bring people together, through sex couples show they live for one another and their mutual love and respect, extramarital sex damages sex’s significance
Why doesn’t the Catholic Church recognise divorce?
Marriage can only end with death or annulment, a sacrament cannot be broken
Two steps Catholic couples can take to reduce splitting up chances?
Marriage care counselling, marriage to be blessed by God
Three annulment terms
Marriage not consummated, candidates related, forced marriage
Remarriage from a catholic and C of E view
Catholic view: Adultery
C of E view: Allowed, a sign of God’s forgiveness
Catholic cohabitation views and contrasting views
Catholic:
Breaks marriage sanctity, removes sense of commitment from sexual union, relationship might end when one partner wants to end it, it can destroy any sense of family
Contrasting:
Not all couples are going to get married, couples might not have sex whilst living together, relationship ending doesn’t matter on cohabitation, people live together for financial reasons
Reasons for not allowing female priests and contrasting views
Catholic:
Jesus only chose male disciples and priests as their successors, there are other roles in the church that women can do, church teaching shouldn’t have to change with society
Contrasting:
Jesus showed great respect for women, the priesthood isn’t a matter of rights it is a vocation, the church must modernise if it wants to expand or even continue to exist
