Relationships And Families Flashcards
What are Catholic beliefs on sexual love?
God made woman out of man so both genders are equal. Sex should be marital(only in marriage, so no pre marital sex), unitive(to deepen a relationship, so no adultery) and procreative(open to the possibility of pregnancy, so no contraception).
What is the theology of the body?
Pope John Paul 2nd’s idea that God loves both genders and they have equal dignity and value, sex is a part of marriage only and helps people explore the meaning of the body through their relationship. Different people have different views on contraception but Catholics are mainly against it
What are Catholic beliefs on human sexuality and expression?
Sex before marriage is wrong because virginity is a gift given to marriage and pre marital sex takes away the value of marriage. Adultery is a betrayal of trust and marriage so it therefore wrong in every way. Being homosexual is not wrong because God loves every human for who they are, however homosexual acts are not allowed for the same reason as contraception: they are not open to the possibility of pregnancy
What are the conditions for a Catholic marriage?
The couple must consummate the marriage for it to be valid. The couple have to promise to each other that they will stay together. The couple must be free to marry, so they can’t be married to anyone else who is still alive. The couple must get married of their own free will. The couple must always be willing to accept God’s gift of children. The promises must be made in front of a Catholic priest. The actual moment of the marriage is consent and the couple must not be closely related
What are Catholic views on the nature of marriage, and cohabitation?
Marriage is a sacrament that shows the love of Jesus for the Church. It is the exclusive union of a man and a woman and provides a loving relationship for which to allow kids to grow up in. Cohabitation is not allowed in the Catholic Church because it may destroy the sense of family, it breaks the sanctities of marriage and sexual union, and removes commitment from the sexual union
What are Catholic views on divorce, annulment and remarriage?
Divorce is not allowed as marriage is “till death do us part”. Annulment is ok if the conditions are met. Remarriage is not allowed because in the eyes of God you are married to two people, which is cheating. Therefore people who divorce and remarry to someone else cannot take communion. A person who gets an annulment is allowed to remarry because in the eyes of God the first “marriage” wasn’t valid
What are Catholic views on family planning and contraception?
Contraception is not okay because it disobeys God’s wish for all sex to be open to his gift of children. Family planning is okay because it lowers the chance of conception but doesn’t remove it entirely
What are Catholic views on the nature and purpose of family?
The Church values family as a miniature church with 4 main tasks: To form a community, to help with the life and personal development of each other, to help the development of wider society, and to be part of the life and mission of the church. Families are the best environment to bring up children and children are a sign of the parents’ love for each other. Parents are the first and most important teachers for their children, and should be their role models too
What are Catholic views on the responsibilities of family?
Families should live their lives like they are serving Jesus. Children should honour their parents as if they were God. Traditionally, the mother looks after the home and children and the father protects and provides for the family. These roles are different yet equal. Still, nowadays these gender roles are often shared or reversed within families.
What does the bible say about gender?
Genesis says God created man and woman in his image. This suggests we are the same. In the bible, both men and woman had very important roles. The Virgin Mary is the most important saint above all others and there were many other important females in the Bible, such as Esther, Deborah, Ruth, Phoebe and Mary Magdalene.
What is Catholic teaching on gender roles?
Men and women aren’t the same, but have equally important roles, even if they may be different. Their roles are complementary, so man and woman needs each other to work better
What are Catholic views on gender discrimination?
Gender discrimination is not allowed and men and women should be treated equally in the workplace. Gender roles can be equal even if they’e different.
What are the marriage vows?
To have and to hold from this day forth For better for worse For richer for poorer In sickness and in health To love and to cherish Until death do us part
