relationships and families Flashcards
Christianity’s attitudes towards sexual relationships
sex expresses a deep loving union that first requires marriage. not all christians agree with this but all are against unfaithfulness. a man and woman should be united together and “increase in number”
Christianity’s attitudes towards homosexual relationships
Some oppose because it goes against Gods plan.
The catholic church teaches that it is sinful - “Do not have sex with a man as one does with a woman - that is detestable” Bible
Church of England welcomes homosexuals in committed relationships but doesnt allow same sex marriage.
Some christians think loving faithful homosexual relationships are just as holy as heterosexual ones.
christian views on sex before marriage
shouldn’t be a casual temporary pleasure.
anglican and catholic teach it it wrong.
some liberal christians think sex before marriage can be a valid expression of love especially if there are plans of marriage or committment.
it is wrong to use people for sex, to risk pregnancy outside of marriage or to spread stds.
“flee from sexual immortality” - bible
sex outside of marriage
against adultery because:
- it breaks the marriage vows made before God
- threatens the stable relationship needed for childrens security
- jesus once forgave a woman who committed adultery and ordered her to leave her life of sin.
- “you shall not commit adultery” - ten commandments
attitudes to conception
- goes against natural law and purpose of marriage
- sex should always be open to creating new life
- contraception is allowed for couples to develop their relationship before having children
- church of england approved artificial contraception in 1930 if it is “in light of christian principles”.
- christians who believe life starts at the moment of contraception believe methods that prevent the fertilised egg from developing are murderous.
