Relationships and Families Flashcards
What are three catholic teachings on what sex should be and what do they mean
- Marital: Sex should only happen between catholic husband and wife
- Unitive: Sex should unite the couple even further
- Procreative: Sex should only happen to create babies
Two things about sex before marriage
- Sex before marriage is wrong - virginity is a gift in marriage that makes both feel more special and loved
- Sex before marriage (especially casual sex) trivialises the act because there is no commitment
What is cohabitation?
Living together as a couple (having sex) without making a formal commitment (ie. marriage)
Why is the catholic church against cohabitation?
- There is no commitment within the sexual union, which can create insecurity for both the couple and the children
- It can lead to a more casual attitude towards the relationship
- It reduces the need for faithfulness
Teachings on what catholic marriage is
Sacrament: God is part of the marriage
Permanent: It is life long
Exclusive: Faithfulness is very important
Life-giving: Should be procreative
Catholic marriage vows
- To have and to hold from this day forwards
- For better for worse
- For richer for poorer
- In sickness and in health
- To love and to cherish
- Until death do us part
Catholic teachings on adultery
- Breaks the marriage vows
- Betrays trust
- Causes hurt and distress to the whole family
- Can cause the break-up of the marriage which can be insecure for the children
- Goes against the 10 commandments
Catholic teachings on homosexuality
- Homosexual sex and marriage is wrong because it is not properly unitive, not procreative and not catholically marital
- Catholics and Church of England will not marry same sex couples
What is divorce?
The legal ending of a marriage. It is not recognised by the catholic church as only God can truly end a marriage
What is remarriage?
When a previously married person marries a new partner
Catholic teachings on remarriage
- Catholics cannot remarry unless the previous partner has died or they have an annulment
- If a catholic does remarry without the above conditions, they shall not receive holy communion
What makes a catholic marriage valid
- Must have consummated (have sex)
- Must give consent and be free to marry
- Must marry of own free will (not forced)
- Must not be closely related
- The five vows must be said in front of a catholic priest
- Must be willing to accept children
What is an annulment?
A statement which states that the catholic marriage was invalid
Grounds for an annulment
- One/both were forced to marry
- One/both never intended to have children
- The marriage was nit consummated
- One/both never intended to be faithful
- Lies/concealment
- Incest
- Couldn’t give consent (not understanding the vows)
