What are the positive effects of a relationship?
higher self esteem, lower stress rates, increased positivity, happiness, support, trust, fulfilment, advice, physical + emotional + social needs, motivation and confidence
What are the negative effects of a relationship?
insecurity, disconnection, conflict, low confidence, unhealthy habits and negative social health
What is the importance of communication?
Good communication can enhance a relationship
Lack of communication harms or can ruin a relationship
What are some communication skills?
active listening, showing empathy, negotiating, resolving conflict and being assertive
What is active listening?
paying close attention to speaker, concentrating on their speech, eye contact, body language and repeating words to show understanding
What is empathy?
identify + understand people’s feelings, being aware of feelings - putting yourself in their shoes
Steps to conflict resolution
open + honest communication, revealing personal thoughts and feelings, admitting being wrong, apologising and accepting apology, compromising, accepting criticism, accepting others’ viewpoints, promising to change behaviour or attitude and not holding a grudge
What is assertive communication?
clearly + confidently stating an opinion or request while listening to and respecting the feelings of others - needs to be practiced
What do assertive communicators not do?
accept what is said without stating an opinion (passive)
verbally attack another person (aggressive)
What is developing ground rules and boundaries?
When establishing new relationships it is important to have a clear idea of both your own and the other person’s expectations. Ground rules are a starting point for relationships
What are rights and responsibilities?
Rights: how you can expect to be treated and what you deserve in a relationship
Responsibilities: how you should treat the other person in a relationship
What do ground rules do?
They allow personal values to be set out and you to establish limits or boundaries which leads to your rights being respected and your responsibilities met.
What is an example of a ground rule?
Honesty = always telling the truth
Characteristics of power
exists in many forms, can be an actual use of force or a threat of using force, aware of influence of power and if it is positively used can be used to build a positive relationship
What are the types of power?
Physical: threat or harm to another person
Use of language
Gender relations
What is personal power?
The degree of control an individual has over their decisions.
What are examples of personal power?
Choosing what to wear
Whether to accept a job
Whether to attend a party
What is social power?
The way different people relate to each other or social dynamics.
Can depend on financial status, education, race, age or gender
What are examples of social power?
Being popular or cool
Excluding an individual who they perceive as being different
What is institutional power?
Having authority over others because of their position or responsibility or experience.
Commonly seen in schools, workplaces, politics and sport
What are examples of institutional power?
Children are expected to do what their parents tell them
What does trust mean?
Having confidence in the honesty and reliability of someone.
What does love mean?
Deep affection for someone
What does negotiation mean?
Bargaining to reach agreement
