This is an explanation for the existence and development of parasocial relationships or celebrity worship. The Absorption-addiction model suggests that people form parasocial relationships when they have deficits in real life relationships. Establishing a parasocial relationship allows them to gain a sense of identity and fulfilment which becomes addictive as it provides a means of escape from reality.
Attachment theory explanation for parasocial relationships
A theory that suggests certain individuals that if a child is unable to form a healthy attachment with a primary caregiver, the child will grow up to compensate with parasocial relationships
Dyadic phase
The second phase in relationship break down which consists of a person vocally expression their dissatisfaction with their relationship with their partner
Equity theory
The theory that for a relationship to be stable, both partners should perceive the relationship to be fiar. If a partner receives too much benefit or finds the costs too large, the relationship is mero likely to fail

The theory that when selecting an ideal partner, people use certain criteria to decide whether someone qualifies as a protential partner or not

The theory that people are more likely to form a relationship with someone they share common traits with

A relationship that develops in an one sided fashion with someone who cannot reciprocate

The theory that there are three factos that contribute to the commitment to a relationship: level of satisfaction, potential alternatives and romantic investment

To share personal information with someone else in an attempt to establish trust within a relationship

The first filter in “the filter theory” which refers to social and cultural features of people e.g. social background and proximity
Social exchange theory
The theory that relationships consist of mutual cost benefit investments. If a relationship exceeds cost and does not read enough benefits, it may end
Social phase
The third phase in the relationship breakdown. A person expresses their dissatisfaction within their social group, causing family and friends to agree or disagree with the person. This will further the breakdown of the relationship.
