Relationships Flashcards
What is the first point for the relationship between Jack and Piggy?
At the start of the novella when Jack and Piggy first meet the first things Jack say is ‘shut up, Fatty’ this suggest that they will have the typical bully and victim relationship. This gives me the impression that they will not get on at all.
What is the second point for the relationship between Jack and Piggy?
Piggy & Jack’s attitude to rules are contrasting shown through their attitude to the conch where Jack ‘seized’ and Piggy ‘cradled’ as well as Jack’s disrespect for rules and order. Piggy also wants everyone’s voice to be heard unlike Jack who want to dictate suggest that they have nothing in common and therefore will not be friends. As well as the fact that Jack uses rules for his own ends whereas piggy just wants to uphold fair democracy shows their different values and how the character contrast each other. This show an overall poor relationship at the start.
What is the third point for the relationship between Jack and Piggy?
When they were lighting the fire Jack ‘smacked’ Piggy’s head causing his glasses broken ‘ this shows that the verbal abuse has increased to violence. Showing no change in their relationship as such but progression in the violence. As well as this ‘the link between Ralph and Jack snapped’ and ‘fastened elsewhere’ this will create more tension between Jack and piggy now because Jack will be jealous which may cause more damage to the nonexistence relationships.
What is the fourth point for the relationship between Jack and Piggy?
Piggy is scared of the idea of Ralph giving up being leader. Later, we find out it is because he is scared of what would happen to him if Jack was leader. Piggy fears that Jack may hurt him or even worse showing how the relationship is still awful.
What is the fifth point for the relationship between Jack and Piggy?
Piggy wants to tell Jack he has to follow the rules and give back the glasses because ‘what’s right’s right’ however Jack has no morals so this won’t work Piggy’s arguments are out of date. This show how different the two boys are and help to explain their relationship as piggy believes in moral and democracy whereas jack believes in survival of the fitness where piggy would never survie.
What is the sixth point of the relationship between Jack and Piggy?
The last we see of Jack and piggy’s relationship is his death. This is where Rodger fires a rock at piggy and it smashes his brains out. Jack’s reaction is that he is proud of Piggy’s death and even says ‘I meant that!’. This suggest that he is taking credit for the death and feels no remorse. As well as this later on he uses it as a threat suggesting that piggy may have been the gateway to more violence. Overall showing the no change in the relationship however it does progression of the violent behavior.
Jack and Piggy relationship overview?
Jack and Piggy have nothing in common and so they were never going to be friends. This is because Piggy is physically weak, but Jack hates weakness of any kind. As well as this. Piggy values order, democracy and justice, but Jack values power and will do anything to get it. Piggy also, has sensible priorities and is a thinker, but Jack cares only for hunting and acts rather than thinks. Jack is a bully and Piggy is an obvious victim. On every level, Jack and Piggy are opposites. This led to Jack picking on piggy from the start Piggy but insults soon turn to physical aggression and this increases through the early chapters. Piggy always knew he was in danger if Jack became leader and this is the case as he is murdered as part of Jack’s plan for complete domination and Survival of the fittest. There relationship is the same throughout however the aggression progress.
What is the first point of the relationship between Jack and Ralph?
At the start when they are deciding who should become the leader Jack says ‘I ought to be chief’ however through democracy Ralph wins this suggest potential conflict over leadership. However, this is solved when Ralph lets Jack’s choir become ‘hunters’ and he can lead them (still has power).
What is the second point of the relationship between Jack and Ralph?
However, at the start they ‘were friends’ as they bond over the fun of rolling rocks and both keen on rules although for different reasons. This therefore shows that at the start of the novella they have a strong friendship which is suspected to continue throughout the book.
What is the third point between the relationship of Ralph and Jack.
In this part of the novella, we seen a turning point within Jack and Ralph’s relationship this is because Jack let out the fire to go hunting. Therefore, leading to Ralph having the realization that they have different priorities (getting rescued and hunting). At the end ‘the link between Ralph and Jack had been snapped and fastened elsewhere’. This when we see Ralph and Piggy’s relationship start therefore causing more damage to Ralph and Jack’s because of jealousy that will follow.
What is the fourth point between the relationship of Jack and Ralph.
When the boys go up the mountain to look at castle rock Ralph wants to turn back as it’s late but Jack says ‘Frightened?’ This suggests he is challenging Ralph’s leadership. Then he keeps implying that Ralph is a coward and even ‘sneered’ this implies a lack of respect for Ralph as leader [trying to undermine him in front of the other boys]. This led to Ralph’s realization that he hates him but he does not understand it is over power. This later on causes Jack to break free from the tribe and comprise the order that Ralph created worsen the relationship.
What is the fifth point for the relationship between Jack and Ralph?
When Ralph says ‘which is better, to have rules and agree or to hunt and kill?’, it suggests that he is trying to reason with Jack. Although he won’t listen to reason any more and even tries to fight him suggesting he is now acting violently on his hatred. This shows a contrast in their relationship from the start of the novella suggesting that the relationship has deteriorated shown by Jack new found violence for Ralph and the fact he know longer lestins to him.
What is the sixth point between the relationship of Jack and Ralph?
Then Ralph realizes there’s ‘an indefinable connection’ between him and Jack and that he really hates him and won’t ever leave him alone. Therefore, it come to no surprise when he comes up with a plan to kill Ralph showing a contrast to their earlier friendship but still in pattern with jack’s behavior of violence.
What is the overview for the relationship between Jack and Ralph?
At first, Jack and Ralph seem compatible and likely to be friends because they are both confident and leader-types. However, there is potential for tension between them as Jack wanted to be chief but through democracy Ralph is voted causing a clear jealously. Soon, tensions start to build because clearly, they have different priorities for example hunting versus the shelters. When Jack lets the fire out, there is a turning point and they fall out because of those different priorities as Ralph is set on being recused and Jack see hunting as more important. After this, Jack undermines Ralph’s authority and disrupts the order in the group until the moment when he breaks off to form his own tribe taking many of the other boys with him. Ralph cannot understand why Jack hates and never sees that it is because he faces a threat for his power because of democracy however at the end Ralph does eventually realize how evil Jack is.
What is the first point in the relationship between Piggy and Ralph?
At the start of the novella when the two boys first meet, we see their differences as Ralph is a ‘fair boy, golden body ‘but Piggy is ‘fat’ with ‘ass-mar’ this suggest that the two boys are not likely friends because they are very different.
