relationship between reason + faith Flashcards
what is REASON ?
rational part of mind : use of logic + establishment of fact + reaching conclusions
what is FAITH ?
having trust + belief in something + someone
- some argue belief in God = unreasonable
why ? (4)
- abt a being who cannot be investigated via science
- same ppl, adopt view that truth = what we see via science + sense // therefore when ppl talk abt God, talkin abt being who can’t be seen , known this way smh
- belief in intelligent designer = hypothesis / / evidence : creations such as conscious beings like homo sapien
- it’s a rational pov . : may / may not be true / / neither irrational or unscientific
- some , faith = only thing that gives us certainty ( fideism)
- faith > reason
- faith : abt passionate commitment + ppl are fully justified in belief of summat 2 be true via own experience
- people can believe in God w passionate conviction yet the CERTAINTY = never experienced via reason
- approach CAN be questioned : some argue that their faith = justification for torture of other’s (extremists) // v irrational
4.( HH PRICE ) / / Middle ground between faith + reason = ‘ i believe IN God ‘ + ‘ I believe THAT God…’
- HH PRICE : phat difference between ‘ i believe in God’ + ‘i believe that God exists’
no religious belief : trivialise religion // bc like it or not = impt. phenomenon we should try 2 understand
4.1 BELIEF IN GOD
can be INTERESTED + DISNITERESTED BELIEF
interested : can hope for benefits from that belief
disinterested : a good thing that G exists in its own right just as friendship exists
4.2 BELIEF THAT GOD…
just an acceptance tbh, of a proposition
- may believe that there IS a god > no god at all but NO VALUE ATTACHED ( unlike interested + disinterested)
4.3 : what is the difference between reasoning ABOUT God + HAVING FAITH IN GOD ?
reason : has value in way we talk abt. God
faith : way we value God as ‘fundamentally good thing’
- nothing in the idea of FAITH excludes posibility we can have reasoned evidence for what we believe as faith
Pope John Paul : argues that truth = known by combination of faith + reason / absence of either one diminishes opp 2 know self + God + world
