Relations (SG) Flashcards
What is a set?
A set is a well defined collection of objects.
What are the 3 ways to represent a set?
Tabular form, Descriptive form, and Set builder form.
This form represents the set by listing all the elements of a set separated by commas and enclosed within curly brackets.
Tabular form
This form represents a set in the state of words describing the elements of the set.
Descriptive form
This form represents a set by writing the common characteristics shared by all the elements of the set in a symbolic form.
Set builder form
A collection of ordered pairs In which the first element is related to the second element.
Relation
a relation can be represented by?
Ordered pairs, Mapping diagram, Table of values, Graph, or Rule
Z = {(4,4),(5,5),(6,6),(7,7)}
How is this relation represented?
By ordered pairs
In this way of representing a relation, the arrows indicate which elements in the first set are related to the elements in the second set.
Mapping Diagram
In this way of representing a relation the elements are arranged in a table wherein the elements of the first set are located above whilst the elements of the second set are located below.
Table
In this way of representing a relation, there is a set of instructions given, the that instruction should be written in set builder form: {(x,y)|x ∈ A, y ∈ B and x=y}
Rule
In this way of representing a relation we plot the points on the cartesian plane.
