-Movement is systematic and sequential
-May be forwards or backwards
-Movement occurs within stages

Dialectical theory and tensions
Change takes place as the result of trying to resolve the inevitable tensions of relationship life
These tensions arise as we try to manage simultaneously to more desirable but but contradictory actions
Goffman civil inattention
Walking down street we will glance up to see if we know the other person at 8ft but if unknown we will dim lights like looking down
Social Exchange theory
1.) Change of resources in relationships
2.) resources are evaluated by us as rewarding or not
3.)people tend to seek things that are rewarding to them
Turning point theory
When a major event occurs that has an impact on the relationship

- Do not talk at all
- Walk past each other without acknowledgement
-Civil Inattention

-People we know use recognize but we share little else
-communication is short, predictable, little breath and depth, ritualistic
Casual Friends
-Slightly less predictable slightly less short
-Small talk
Intimates
-Spontaneous talk, more uncertain, less predictable
-short hand communication
-inside jokes, nicknames, highly accessible
