Rejuvenation Flashcards
What is rejuvenation? (Rejuvenation rivers)
The renewal of a rivers energy in response to a relative fall in base level (sea level change)
What is eustatic change encouraged by? (Rejuvenation rivers)
- Thermal expansion (global warming)
- Glacier periods (water locked as ice sheets)
- Interglacial periods (melting glaciers)
What is a kick point? (Rejuvenation rivers)
- The river has created a newly graded profile to adjust to the new base level
- Identified by a break in slope
- Vertical erosion
What is a river terrace? (Rejuvenation rivers)
- Remains of the former flood plain
- Abandoned as the river has eroded too deeply to access it
- New floodplain is created either side be neither original
What types of incised meanders are there? (Rejuvenation rivers)
Entrenched and ingrown
Why do incised meanders form? (Rejuvenation rivers)
Increase in the rates of vertical erosion, more deep set
How does an entrenched meander form? (Rejuvenation rivers)
Rapid and equal rates of erosion leaves a clear symmetrical cross section
How does an ingrown meander form? (Rejuvenation rivers)
Vertical and lateral erosion occurs at differing rates, resulting in an asymmetrical cross section
What landforms result from rejuvenation? (Rejuvenation rivers)
