Q

Reissuing of the Declaration of Indulgence by James:

Summary

A

Gave toleration to all religious groups, both Protestant and Catholic.

LED TO pamphleteering against the Declaration:

  • Marquis of Halifax: Dissenters should resist J’s proposals and wait for parliament to pass its own law: one offering true religious freedom that did not favour Catholics and did not set precedent for absolute rule.
  • Gilbert Burnet (Williamite): Since Restoration, monarchs had attempted to create divisions among Protestants in order to pursue their agenda of promoting Catholicism and arbitrary government. Both dissenting nonconformists and conformists should work together to defend the Established Church. Claimed in 1687 that James had disobeyed the constitution of England, thus virtually removing himself from government. > popular idea by 1688-89 by William’s supporters
