Reincarnation Flashcards
What is reincarnation in Hinduism
Transmigration of the soul
- the rebirth in another body ( after physics body’s death ) of some critical part of a persons personality or spirit
Reincarnated people remember what
Previous lives or even show similar physical marks from their previous life
What does remembering previous life suggest
That the soul affects the brain and gives it information and the soup can affect the body physically (dualistic view)
What is karma (action)
is the principle of cause and effect in Hinduism and Buddhism
- asserts all acts or deeds leave their influence on a future transmigration of the person
basic idea of karma currently
current situation of a human being is the consequence of the person’s actions and thought in current and past lives
What does karma remove the idea of
God/deity judging people
Within Hinduism life and death are regarded as what
part of the cycle of existence
Person lives their life, dies and then the soul is reborn again in another body
the cycle carries on until the soul achieves what
ultimate reality - nirvana
In nirvana it is when the soul is united with who
Brahman - the ultimate god of Hinduism
the soul regards itself as what
being enclosed in a set of ‘bodies’
gross body = the physical body
subtle body = the mind
which body is reincarnated
the subtle body
what empirical evidence is there for reincarnation
reincarnation explains many odd phenomena in human life
- fear of death could stem from knowledge of previous lives
- why a child may be born genius (Mozart)
Problem with reincarnation scholar
John Hick
- such phenomena may be simply due to instinct and exceptionally fortunate genetic combinations
