complete injury
a total loss of function below a spinal cord injury; results to no sensation or movement.
incomplete injury
some function below the level of a spinal cord injury; results in more movement in one limb than the other, feeling in parts of the body, or more function on one side of the body than other.
paraplegic
someone who cannot move or feel their legs of lower half of their body because of injury or illness.
spinal cord injury
an injury to the spinal cord which is caused by trauma.
to immobilize
to stop someone or something from moving. Usually done by health-care professional to prevent further injury.
impairment
a condition where a part of your body or mind does not work properly due to injury or illness.
locomotor system
an organ system that allows the body to move using its muscular and skeletal systems; provides movement and stability to the body.
neurogenic pain
pain resulting from dysfunction of the central nervous system or the outside part of the central nervous centrum.
recurring episode
something that keeps happening again and again.
spasticity
a muscle-control disorder in which the muscles are tight or stiff.
body-weight support system
device worn by patients in order to rehabilitate physical movement and locomotion.
Botulinum toxin
neurotoxin produced by bacteria and used for therapeutic or cosmetic purposes.
caregiver
a person who provides care to someone.
Day-treatment rehabilitation
care of people who no longer require hospitalization but who still require some types of therapy, and are treated in special centres.
Lifestyle changes
changes in a person’s daily habits or behaviour.
